YearlyBird

Our Volunteer Opportunities Are Limitless

If you are local to the SUN ‘n FUN Expo Campus and would like to volunteer with us year-round, our “Yearly Birds” volunteer program has plenty of opportunities for you. With onsite and community events throughout the year, work options vary with each unique activity available. Volunteers choose experiences that are interesting to them, offering their time and talents based on personal interests. It is a great way to meet new people and learn about our organization!

With a minimum of four hours a month, 10 months out of each year, these volunteers are recognized with Day of Choice tickets to the SUN ‘n FUN Aerospace Expo, passes to Florida Attractions and an annual banquet in October acknowledging their contributions throughout the year.

Tell us about your interests and availability by filling out the form below, and Robin McFarland, our Volunteer Director will match you with the perfect opportunity to fit your lifestyle!

  • Eight out of Twelve Months – giving 8 hours of volunteer service per month

Jim Albrand

Jim Albrand

Jim Albrand is a nine-year SUN ‘n FUN Fly-In Volunteer and part of our YearlyBird volunteer family for four years.

During our 2022 YearlyBird Banquet, Jim received the YearlyBird Spirit Award recognizing the volunteer with the highest number of volunteer hours during the 2022 YearlyBird season, Jim served 2,119 volunteer hours.

This summer, Jim was instrumental in converting our online ticketing system over to a much more user-friendly platform.  This new ticket system has provided our guests with a streamlined way to purchase our event tickets, improving their overall experience.

During our Fly-In, Jim serves in a leadership role and chairs our Admissions/Registration operation.  When Jim is not totally focused on the admissions functions, he supports our IT team on a year-round basis.

Jim likes to call himself a “35-year student pilot with no lessons” He loves the subject of aviation and knows a lot of information aspects of aviation such as engine and hydraulic specifics for commercial airliners – especially Boeing. He immersed himself in books in High School about aviation. At 14 years old he started volunteering at airshows to learn more about the aviation industry and meet pilots. Jim is a Civil Air Patrol member. He has volunteered with events like Women in Aviation and would love to see the number of female pilots increase.  In addition to Jim’s volunteer service at SUN ‘n FUN, he also volunteers in the Homebuilt Registration area at AirVenture.

Thank you, Jim, for your passion for SUN ‘n FUN and ACE and the mission to Engage, educate & accelerate the next generation of aerospace professionals.

YearlyBird Volunteer Spotlight

Ron & Judy Stiltner

Ron and Judy are some of our favorite volunteers! It’s such a plus when we find a couple that wants to volunteer and make such a great team!

Ronnie was asked how he and Judy came to volunteer at SUN ‘n FUN and his response was surprising.  They were introduced to the volunteer aspect of SUN ‘n FUN by working with the Southern Baptist Convention during the SUN ‘n FUN Aerospace Expo who supported a Kid’s Activities tent by working with the kids in the west campground by Hangar E. That playground is no longer there now.

Before retiring in 2010, Ron worked 38 years at the Polk County Property Appraisers office and the Commercial Real Estate Department. Ron has volunteered with SUN ‘n FUN for 12 years as our main year-round event photographer. Judy has also volunteered with us for 12 years. Judy worked in banking for 20 years and 10 years as a Preschool Director.

Now, during the Expo, Judy supports Camp Duffy operations and Volunteer Credential Disbursement and Ron spends much of his time with his love of photography and supporting our guests in Preferred Airshow Seating.

Year-round, Judy and Ron have supported our events by assisting with our camping operations, summer camp activities and pretty much anything asked of them.

In addition to volunteering with SUN ‘n FUN, Judy spends a lot of her time at a local church food bank preparing food for all the volunteers that help there and preparing the groceries to give out to their clients. She likes doing missions at her church and traveling. Ron on the other hand loves knives and has quite the collection! When the Stiltners travel, Ron keeps an eye out for knives to add to his collection. Ron was also asked why they volunteered when you could do anything you want to do and his response was clear “we volunteer because we enjoy working with people and especially the education programs that encourage young people to go for their dreams.”
